Wooden Cable Railing

JANUARY 2026

Louisville, CO

This railing was built on top of an existing deck that was in disrepair. The old railing was falling apart after ~20 years and needed a refresh. We started by meticulously taking apart the old railing along with the picture frame boards and fascia as to not ruin what remained. The old rim joist beam was then planed down to a level to better match the settling of the joist. A corner of the deck was rotted through, (see photos). This was re-framed with new lumber, tied into the existing deck and shored up with a two new 6x6 posts and new footer beneath one of them. All of the new 6x6 railing posts were custom built and notched onto the tilted rim joist, secured with 1/2" galvanized carriage bolts. New picture frame decking and fascia boards installed to match existing. The rails are smooth cedar, posts are douglas fir, and cocktail rail mahogany - all stained with General Finishes Exterior 450 Butternut finish. Finished this off with 1/8" Stainless Cable and Stainless hardware.
