What I install
Replacing hollow, dated interior doors changes the look and feel of a whole house. New doors sound and feel more solid, and new hardware and casing finish the look. New exterior doors and windows increase energy efficiency with double pane, low-e glass, and new seals.
Pre-hung Doors
A new door with a frame.
Slab Doors
A new door hung in your existing frame, with hinge mortises and lockset holes cut to fit.
Custom Doors
Designed and built by us to match an old style or fit a custom sized opening.
Replacement Windows
Replacement windows fit inside your existing window frame without disturbing the exterior siding or trim.
New Construction Windows
New construction windows feature a nailing flange that attaches directly to the wall studs and requires removing the surrounding trim and siding
Hardware
Hinges, knobs or levers, and door stops.
Slab or pre-hung? A slab door costs less and is less disruptive if your existing frames are square and in good shape. A pre-hung door is the better choice when frames are damaged or out of square, or when you're changing the door size or style. I'll check your frames and recommend the right option.
What affects the cost?
-
Number of doors or windows — whole-house jobs are more efficient than single replacements.
-
Slab vs. pre-hung — pre-hung doors include new frames and take longer to install.
-
Type — Door: hollow-core, solid-core or solid wood. Window: fixed vs operable.
-
Style — Door: panel, shaker, glass or custom doors. Window: casement, bay, double-hung, fixed.
-
Odd sizes or thick walls — nonstandard openings may need custom doors or jambs.
-
Casing — reusing existing casing vs. installing new casing.
-
Hardware — knobs, levers and hinges, and whether they're supplied or reused.
FAQs
Should I get slab doors or pre-hung doors?
If your frames are square and in good shape, slab doors usually make sense. If frames are damaged or out of square, or you're changing door sizes, pre-hung is the better choice. I'll check your openings and recommend one.
Is a solid-core door worth it?
For most people, yes. Solid-core doors block more sound, feel heavier and more substantial, and are less likely to dent.
Do you have to remove my trim to replace doors?
For slab doors, no. For pre-hung doors, the casing has to come off. It can sometimes be reused, or it's a good time to upgrade to new casing.
Should I choose paint-grade or stain-grade trim?
Paint-grade (MDF or pine) costs less and is what most homes have. Stain-grade hardwood shows the wood grain and suits Craftsman and older homes with natural woodwork, but costs more in material and labor.
Can you shorten my doors after new flooring?
Yes. Doors can be trimmed at the bottom to clear new flooring or thicker rugs.
