What I install

A staircase is often the first thing people see when they walk in. Updating dated spindles, a wobbly railing or worn treads can change the feel of a whole entry. Installing new handrails on your deck often improves safety and gives it a whole new feel.

Baluster Replacement

From wood to iron balusters, or new wood balusters in an updated style.

Newel Posts

New posts at the bottom, top and turns of a staircase.

Handrails

Post-to-post railings and wall-mounted handrails.

Treads and Risers

Replacing carpeted or worn stairs with new treads and risers.

New Stringers

Building new stairs entirely.

Skirt Boards and Stair Trim

Finishing the edges of stairs where they meet the wall.

Newel posts are what keep a railing rigid. I anchor them securely into the framing so the railing doesn't wobble. Handrails are set at the proper height, typically 34" to 38" above the stair nosing, and balusters are spaced so a 4" sphere can't pass through. Local code governs, and I build to it. Baluster spacing is laid out before installing so it's consistent from the bottom of the stairs to the top.

What affects the cost?

  • Number of balusters — the biggest factor for most railing jobs.

  • Newel posts — how many posts the staircase needs.

  • Rail length and fittings — turns, goosenecks and volutes add time and material.

  • Materials — wood vs. iron balusters, and the wood species for rails and treads.

  • Treads and risers — whether stairs are being re-treaded.

  • Half-wall conversions — removing a wall and adding a railing is a larger job.

  • Finish — paint-grade vs. stain-grade.

FAQs

Should I choose iron or wood balusters?

Iron balusters have a cleaner, more modern look. Wood balusters suit traditional and Craftsman homes. Both are durable when installed well.

Can you open up the half-wall on my split-level stairs?

Often, yes, as long as the wall isn't structural. I'll look at it first and let you know if the change might need a permit.

Does my new railing have to meet code?

Yes. Railing height and baluster spacing have code requirements, and I build to them.

Can you replace just the balusters?

It really depends. Typically the handrail will have to be removed and replaced but the newel posts can stay.

Can you match my existing stain?

I can get close and test samples first, but matching aged stain exactly isn't always possible.
